As a new CrossFit Box, we are all getting to know each other and building that tight community we always envisioned. Each month we will be profiling a CrossFit Grail Athlete that is interesting and inspirational. A person that demonstrates a positive attitude, shows up every day and puts their heart and soul into their workout, never gives up, and cheers everyone on. And someone who is pretty cool! Although we think everyone brings all these things to the table, we can only pick one.
October 2017 Athlete of the Month: Shawn Bockstahler
Why we chose Shawn: Shawn is the definition of a technical athlete. Watching Shawn is like watching a text book come alive. His movements are solid from beginning to end. When fatigued, he may slow down but his form remains rock solid. Not only is Shawn the poster for good form, he is also an incredibly caring individual. Shawn was a member of CrossFit Grail before we were officially open as part of the ‘Grail Founder’s Club’, the focus group we created while we were still in the planning stages. Shawn helped cut and hang plywood on the walls late into the evenings with only flood lamps lighting the way. He did this because he is as passionate about our vision as we are! Shawn completed his 3rd Spartan race this year completing his fitness goal. We thank Shawn for his continued contribution as well as the example he provides to all of us.

Tell us a little about yourself:
I was born in a basement clinic in downtown Atlanta, GA while my dad was finishing up college at Georgia Tech. I moved to Colorado when I was 5 and did all my schooling here in Colorado. I met my wife, Breann, in high school band; our first date was seeing the movie Twister in the theaters. I attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and received a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. I work for Lockheed Martin as a Systems Engineer. Bre and I have two beautiful daughters, Allison and Ashley, who are 8 years and 3 months respectively. My hobbies are CrossFit, 4-wheeling with the family, and video games. I am also an Eagle Scout.
How long have you been doing CrossFit and what got you started?
I started my fitness journey at boot camp classes at the Trails Recreation Center. I enjoyed it a lot so when the coach there flaked out, I searched the area and found CrossFit Southlands was just opening up in the early summer of 2012. I’ve consistently been doing CrossFit ever since.
What did you do for your fitness before CrossFit?
Before CrossFit I never really worked out consistently, although I’ve always been fairly active through boy scouts, marching band, and lacrosse.
What are your favorite CrossFit exercises?
Handstand push-ups, Box-Overs, Burpees
How has doing CrossFit changed your life outside of the Box?
Other than being more physically fit than I used to be, CrossFit has really increased my confidence. Being able to tackle a WOD and give it everything I’ve got is really rewarding. Knowing on a semi-daily basis that I can set out to complete a workout and conquer it reminds me that I can accomplish a lot if I apply myself.
What motivates you to keep WOD-ing?
The Grail community gives me so much strength. It is so awesome to watch someone get their first pull-up or push-up, or conquer their fears by doing a box jump or rope climb. Every time I walk in the box my goal is to be better than I was yesterday and I hope that by doing so I can show others that they can do the same.
What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?
So far I think my biggest accomplishment is my family. Having a long lasting, loving marriage is difficult with all the challenges that are put before us. Relationships are difficult and it has always been, and will continue to be one of my goals, to have a strong partnership with my wife.
What is YOUR QUEST?
This month: Do my best with Eric (Keely) in completing the CrossFit Team Series.
This year: I was able to accomplish my 2017 QUEST of completing a Spartan Trifecta (sprint, super and beast in one calendar year). Next year I plan to complete another Trifecta but I also would like to run a marathon. I also want to compete in a weightlifting competition at some point in the future.
This lifetime: At some point in the future I’d like to get my Level 1 CrossFit Certification and start coaching (I haven’t yet because of my job and family). Other bucket list items are: skydiving, bungee jumping, completing a Spartan Ultra Beast, go to the CrossFit Games (as a spectator), and see the Northern Lights.
