A lot of people are happy to put 2020 behind them. It was tough year for everyone in many ways. But you know what? You did it. You made it through. You overcame obstacles. You learned from the challenges. And you are stronger for it.
Your body and mind are designed to adapt when increased stress is applied. Because you have an interest in fitness, you understand that when challenged with a tough workout, your mind digs deep to find the determination and tells your body to push hard and overcome. You come out the other side stronger, both physically and mentally.
2020 was like a very long, grueling workout. We talk about the 10 General Physical Skills (endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, coordination, agility, balance, accuracy, power and speed), along with MINDSET and GRIT (courage and resolve; strength of character) that prepares you for any challenge that comes your way outside of the gym. Well, if 2020 wasn’t a challenge, I don’t know what is!!!
This is also an important lesson for kids and teens to learn as well. Whether watching their parents push themselves or joining in during the virtual workouts. With so many teens in the gym now, they have learned that they can push themselves outside of their comfort zone and channel that inner grit. They can adapt and overcome.
As we head into 2021, remember this: Exercise is one of the best natural ways to relieve stress, reduce anxiety and cope with depression. 2020 was a little bit better because you cared about your fitness, were able to relieve some stress, had the grit to push through, and had a social outlet and the support of your Grail community. It’s what you’ve been training for! You should feel a huge sense of accomplishment.
Don’t get me wrong. Just because we took another trip around the sun and made it to another January, it doesn’t mean that everything magically returned to ‘normal.’ I fully expect 2021 will continue to have its share of challenges. But keep moving, because now you know you CAN adapt, overcome, and continue getting stronger – body and mind. So, bring on 2021 – you’ve got this!
