August 2019 Athlete Spotlight

August 2019 Athlete Spotlight

As a growing CrossFit box, we are all getting to know each other and building that tight community we always envisioned.  Each month, we profile a CrossFit Grail Athlete that is interesting and inspirational. A person that demonstrates a positive attitude, shows up every day and puts their heart and soul into their workout, never gives up, crushes their goals, cheers everyone on and is passionate about the CrossFit Grail Community. And someone who is pretty cool! Although we think everyone has these qualities, we can only pick one.

August 2019 Athlete Spotlight: David Ceja

Tell us a little about yourself:
I grew up in Los Angeles and joined the Army at 17. After 10 years on active duty I transferred to the Colorado National Guard and have been here ever since 2006. I am the lucky father of three and I am married to my loving wife Amanda. My hobbies include shooting, eating tacos, going to concerts and lifting heavy things.

How long have you been doing CrossFit and what got you started?
I have been doing CrossFit for about a year and a half. I got into it because as I crept into my forties, I was unable to lose or keep weight off anymore doing the routines that had previously worked for me.

What did you do for your fitness before CrossFit?
Mostly a mixture of Olympic Lifting and traditional lifts. I always changed my routine every six to eight weeks to avoid plateaus and was a fan of supersets and forced reps. I would always wrap up my workouts with a 1-3 mile run.

What do you like most about CrossFit?
I hate it. I hate it but it works, so that is what I like about it- RESULTS!

How has doing CrossFit changed your life outside of the Box?
It has given me back my fitness level that I once had. It also has done wonders for my lower back pain as I have a herniated L3/L4 disc and was in constant pain for the longest time. I hope I don’t jinx myself, but I have not had any major back pain since starting CrossFit.

What motivates you to keep working out?
The awesomeness that is the 4:30pm Crew! You want heavy lifts and heavy metal melting your face!? 4:30pm is where you find it! Well, to be honest most of that assessment is subject to interpretation….

What are your 3 favorite CrossFit movements?
That’s easy:
1. Deadlift
2. Squat
3. Bicep Curls

What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?
While it is tempting to say that my Army career is my biggest accomplishment it pales in comparison to being a husband and father.

This month: Deadlift 450#. I have to catch Mike – can’t have a 50+ year old have the heaviest lift!
This year: Help Coach Eric with his bicep deficiency syndrome.
This lifetime: Find the perfect Taco… and eat it.
