As a new CrossFit Box, we are all getting to know each other and building that tight community we always envisioned. Each month we will be profiling a CrossFit Grail Athlete that is interesting and inspirational. A person that demonstrates a positive attitude, shows up every day and puts their heart and soul into their workout, never gives up, and cheers everyone on. And someone who is pretty cool! Although we think everyone brings all these things to the table, we can only pick one.
August 2017 Athlete of the Month: MIKE MILES
Why we chose Mike: Mike and his wife, Rachel joined Grail on opening weekend. We knew Mike and his family were new to the area and found out that Mike was also a Certified L1 CrossFit coach. It became apparent rather quickly that Mike is not just a well-rounded and stellar Athlete, but is also passionate about CrossFit and helping others find their fitness. Mike embodies what CrossFit and the CrossFit Grail community is all about. He has been so supportive and helpful with all the Athletes, sharing his knowledge, insight and enthusiasm, both inside and outside of class – even attending the final session for the last group of On Ramp graduates when he wasn’t even coaching! Mike was always a candidate for Athlete of the Month, but we liked Mike so much, that we also made him a CrossFit Grail coach last month. So we wanted to take the opportunity now to acknowledge Mike for all he has done for CrossFit Grail as an Athlete now that he is making his transition to both Athlete and Coach.
Tell us a little about yourself:
I’m originally from Florida where I grew up doing a lot of skateboarding and surfing. I was a roofing contractor for 25 years which helped keep me in pretty good shape. I’ve only lived in Colorado a few months but love it here. I’m a vintage comic book dealer and also own a business performing conservation and restoration work on vintage comic books. So obviously I’m also a big comic book collector. I also collect some vintage Star Wars toys and skateboards from the 1980’s.
I’ve been married to my beautiful (she’s looking over my shoulder as I write this) wife Rachel for 14 years and we have a twelve-year-old son, Baden.
How long have you been doing CrossFit and what got you started?
I’ve been doing CrossFit for about five years and just happened on it when a new box opened in my home town. I had been fairly sedentary for a couple years and was looking for something different and interesting.
What did you do for your fitness before CrossFit?
In my late twenties and early thirties I was a very serious cyclist and raced both road and mountain bikes. My primary focus was mountain bikes and I had a pretty successful amateur career winning the State Championships in Florida and qualifying for a pro license.
How has doing CrossFit changed your life outside of the Box?
I’ve always been a bit reserved, shy, and afraid to fail, but knowing what I can do at the box has helped my confidence in all walks of life.
What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?
Without a doubt – my wife and son and our family unit.
What is YOUR QUEST?
This month: To work out the little unfamiliar things that pop up as a new CrossFit coach.
This year: Become a great CrossFit coach, and keep improving my own level of fitness.
This lifetime: To remain healthy so I can be the best father and husband I can be for as long as I’m needed. To maintain a certain level of health and fitness so Rachel and I can enjoy a retired life exploring and relaxing in the mountains and beaches around the world.
